The Capitol Hill Holiday Market is a wonderful example of the community found here at our little school in SW Portland. Among local professional vendors are three CH educators who enjoy being crafty in a variety of ways.

Rebecca Johnson, first grade teacher at Capitol Hill, is a long-time crafter and has worked in many mediums, but has found her niche creating beautiful terrariums in upcycled glass containers. She will also be offering a "make and take" area for personal gift making of air plants in glass.

Pam Wilson, Principal at Capitol Hill, has discovered a passion for creating utilitarian works of art using a variety of ceramic, glass, wooden, and other collected objects.

Jessica Doehne, CH first grade teacher by day and SewPortland crafter by night, enjoys sewing functional pieces of art work including (but not limited to) funky scarves, tote bags, and reversible headbands (pictured above).

All three of these vendors are thrilled that they can do what they love and earn money for the school. Each vendor at the Holiday Market donates 25% of their earnings directly to Capitol Hill, making this popular event a very important school fundraiser. We hope to see CH families and community members on Friday, December 6th, and Saturday, December 7th.

Who Are We?

This year's holiday market committee comprises of parents and teachers of Capitol Hill. Many of us are also artists and artisans that will be participating at this year's holiday market as well! First up...me, Lida Avery. I came onto this year's committee because Cathy McMurray's child will be completing 5th grade at the end of this upcoming school year. Since I have an incoming 2nd grader, and a Kindergartner in another year, I'll be at Capitol Hill for a while!

A quick about me: I am a teacher in the Hillsboro School District, I have a child attending Capitol Hill, and other child in pre-k, and I am an artist/crafter. I enjoy illustrating, sewing, ceramics, photography, and knitting. Visit my blog to see more! My goal for this holiday market is to not only raise money for Capitol Hill students by providing parents, families, and the community with a high caliber of artisans at the holiday marketplace, but also to make it profitable for the vendors so that they can sell a high volume of their products, and would want to come back next year! Well, I will be featuring the other committee members over the next few days....so stay tuned! In the meantime, my teeth people say, "Hi!"

Why the Capitol Hill Holiday Market?

Many potential vendors might think, why should I participate in the Capitol Hill Holiday Market? While it might seem that donating 25% of sales may be a bit more than what you were expecting, just remember that the money you donate is going directly to the students for the arts. In the Portland Public Schools, K-5 schools do not have a structured art curriculum. Recently the city passed the Art Tax, but even that is under scrutiny recently. The money raised at the Holiday Market can be used to purchase more art supplies and work with various artists and art programs in the community. As most people are aware, art is a quickly dying necessity in our schools, and with this Holiday Market, we are hoping to restore art back to the students.

Besides the cause, you might be wondering, where is Capitol Hill Elementary? Capitol Hill is located in SW Portland, close to Multnomah Village. It is a smaller K-5 school that boasts high student achievement and a very involved PTA and local community. This wonderful neighborhood school serves students all the way from John's Landing to part of Multnomah Village. Students, parents, and the community take much pride in our neighborhood school!  You can learn more about our school on the school website.

Getting Ready....

We are already starting to think about getting ready for our 3rd holiday market this year! The Capitol Hill Holiday Market will be on Friday, December 6th from 5-8PM and on Saturday, December 7th from 10AM-4PM. Currently we are seeking previous and new vendors to contact us if they are interested in applying to be a part of our wonderful holiday market. If you are interested in applying to be a vendor in the holiday market, please email Lida Avery at lida.avery@gmail.com for more information. We have room for about 30 or so vendors, so space is limited! To be accepted into the holiday market, you must fill out an application by October 20th. Then we will notify accepted vendors by November 1, 2013. If you are accepted, you will need to pay the $30 booth fee ($35 with electricity) by November 25th. After November 25th, the booth fee will be $40 ($45 with electricity). Since it is a Capitol Hill PTA fundraiser, we are asking all vendors to donate 25% of their sales to the PTA. Please check back in for more information in the next few weeks!
